Occupational therapy (OT) helps people relearn the everyday tasks that a stroke or neurological condition can make difficult, such as dressing, cooking, writing, and bathing. The goal is simple: help you do the things that matter to you with more confidence and less frustration.
What Occupational Therapy Does After a Stroke
After a stroke, many people notice changes in arm strength, hand coordination, vision, memory, or energy. An occupational therapist looks at how these changes affect your daily routine and builds a plan to work around them or recover from them. Therapy is practical and personal. If buttoning a shirt or opening a jar is the challenge, that is what you practice.
Hand and Arm Function Recovery
Regaining use of the hand and arm is often a top priority. Your therapist may use:
- Repetitive, task-based exercises to retrain movement
- Fine motor activities for grip, pinching, and dexterity
- Strengthening and stretching to reduce stiffness
- Techniques to encourage use of the weaker side
Consistent practice is what drives progress, so you will also receive exercises to do at home.
Daily Living Skills: Dressing, Cooking, and Bathing
Occupational therapy focuses on real routines. Your therapist can teach new strategies for:
- Getting dressed with one hand or limited reach
- Preparing simple meals safely
- Bathing and grooming independently
- Managing medications and daily schedules
- Returning to hobbies, driving, or work when appropriate
Home Safety and Adaptive Equipment Tips
Small changes at home can make a big difference. Your therapist can recommend grab bars, shower seats, easy-grip utensils, or a better layout for frequently used items. These changes reduce fall risk and help you stay independent longer. Family members and caregivers are welcome to join sessions so everyone feels prepared.
