Speech therapy for Parkinson’s disease helps people speak louder and more clearly, swallow more safely, and stay connected to the people around them. Many people with Parkinson’s notice these changes before they realize therapy can help, and starting early often leads to better results.

Common Speech and Swallowing Changes in Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s can affect the muscles used for speaking and swallowing. Common changes include:

  • A soft or breathy voice
  • Speech that sounds monotone or mumbled
  • Speaking too quickly or trailing off at the end of sentences
  • Reduced facial expression
  • Coughing or choking when eating or drinking
  • Feeling like food sticks in the throat

Often the person feels like they are speaking normally while others struggle to hear them. That gap is one of the most common reasons families seek therapy.

What Speech Therapy Sessions Look Like

Your first visit is an evaluation. A speech-language pathologist will listen to your voice, assess how you speak and swallow, and talk with you about your daily communication needs. From there, sessions are structured and goal-focused, with plenty of practice using real-life conversation, reading aloud, and phone calls.

Voice Strengthening and Swallowing Techniques

Therapy may include:

  • Voice exercises that train you to speak with more volume and clarity
  • Breathing and posture techniques that support stronger speech
  • Pacing strategies to slow speech and improve understanding
  • Swallowing exercises to strengthen the muscles used to eat and drink
  • Safe swallowing strategies, such as chin position and food texture guidance

Your therapist will also give you exercises to practice at home, because frequent repetition is key to lasting change.

How Speech Therapy Fits With PT and OT

Parkinson’s affects the whole body, so care works best as a team. Speech therapy pairs well with physical therapy for movement and balance, occupational therapy for daily tasks, and our Rock Steady Boxing program for fitness and community. Having all three under one roof makes scheduling easier and keeps every therapist on the same page.
