Don’t Let Balance Be the Scary Part of Fall: 5 Habits to Prevent Falls

Even in South Florida, October brings change: earlier sunsets, afternoon downpours, slick walkways, and the start of “season” crowds and busier schedules. For anyone dealing with balance challenges, dizziness, or a neurological condition like Parkinson’s disease, those small changes can add up to a real fall risk.

The good news: balance is a skill, and skills can be trained. Here are five habits our therapists recommend this time of year.

1. Light Up the Night

Shorter days mean more trips to the bathroom or kitchen in the dark. Add plug-in night lights along the path from your bedroom to the bathroom, and keep a flashlight within reach. Most home falls happen in poorly lit spaces.

2. Respect the Wet Spots

Rain, sprinklers, and morning dew make tile, pool decks, and painted walkways slippery. Wear shoes with real grip (not flip-flops or smooth soles), and slow down on wet surfaces. Take smaller steps and keep your eyes on the ground ahead.

3. Practice the “Ghost Stand”

Stand beside a kitchen counter and lift one foot so you’re balancing on the other leg. Hold for 20 seconds, then switch. Work up to three rounds per side. Keep a hand near the counter for safety. Once that feels easy, try it with your eyes looking at a spot on the wall, then turning your head slowly side to side.

4. Keep Your Legs Strong

Strong hips and thighs are your first line of defense when you trip. Sit-to-stand exercises from a sturdy chair, heel raises at the counter, and daily walking all help. If you’re not sure where to start or what’s safe for your condition, a physical therapist can build a program around you.

5. Don’t Ignore Dizziness or Near-Falls

A stumble that you “caught yourself” on is a warning sign, not a fluke. Frequent dizziness, a spinning sensation, or feeling unsteady when you turn your head can have causes that therapy can address, including vestibular issues. Talk with your doctor and ask about a balance evaluation.

How Therapy Can Help

At Florida Movement Therapy Centers, our physical and occupational therapists work one-on-one to improve balance, strength, and confidence, including vestibular and balance therapy for dizziness and unsteadiness. For people living with Parkinson’s disease, our certified Rock Steady Boxing program builds strength, balance, and coordination in a supportive, non-contact setting.

Ready to feel steadier on your feet? Call our Boca Raton clinic at 561-883-7800 or our Boynton Beach clinic at 561-733-5083, or email info@flmtc.com to get started.
